Here we offer you one very quick to read but good for novice or future becoming GPS users guide. Recently at the market there are four major types of GPS receivers – the Standalone GPS receivers,
Bluetooth GPS receivers, CompactFlash GPS expansion cards and Combo devices.

Standalone GPS receiver

Standalone GPS receivers come in a variety of shapes and sizes to suit different budgets from the basic monochrome screen ones to full-colour handheld and car navigation systems.

There are quite a number of manufacturers in the market, but the more well-known ones are Magellan and Garmin, and they produce a bewildering array of standalone receivers, even down to wristwatch-sized ones specifically meant to monitor activities like jogging and cycling.

Some issues to consider when buying a standalone GPS receiver is how much built-in memory it has – normally 1MB to 4MB of internal memory is not a good idea if you’re planning to load a lot of maps into the receiver as most maps tend to take up about 2MB to 5MB.

High-end models also feature barometric pressure sensors and even digital compasses to augment the information provided by the GPS unit.

Most standalone GPS units are also built to be very tough and water resistant which makes them ideal for hiking and water activities like sailing.

Bluetooth GPS receiver

Increasingly becoming a popular item for tech-savvy GPS users, the Bluetooth GPS receiver does not have any kind of display whatsoever – instead, the device is used in tandem with a PDA, laptop or even a smartphone.

With the appropriate software installed, the PDA /notebook/ smartphone gives you functions normally found in ultra-expensive standalone GPS receivers – a colour screen, colour maps and turn-by-turn voice directions.

Because the Bluetooth GPS unit can interface with all kinds of Bluetooth-enabled computers – the versatility is only limited by the software and maps available for the particular host device.

While a Bluetooth GPS unit is great for navigating the streets and getting driving instructions, it’s not particularly great for hiking experiance because of the generally poorer weather sealing and the necessity of carrying two devices for it to work.

CompactFlash GPS expansion cards

The predecessor to the Bluetooth GPS unit, the CompactFlash GPS receiver plugs directly into the CompactFlash card slot on some handhelds and notebook computers.

A CompactFlash GPS receiver has all the functions of a Bluetooth unit but doesn’t have the same versatility as it only interfaces with devices that have a CompactFlash slot.

Nevertheless, devices such as these are generally cheaper than Bluetooth units and are great if you are walking around holding a PDA in your hand, as the reception is generally better with the aerial facing directly to the open sky.

Combo devices

Some manufacturers, such as Mitac, Holux and even Garmin have come up with devices that marry a Pocket PC or PalmOS device with a GPS chipset, offering a unit similar to a standalone GPS but with the versatility of a full-fledged operating system.

These devices often come with the manufacturer’s own software and maps pre-installed on the device but there’s nothing stopping you from installing your own applications and maps.

The bonus, of course, is that you can use the handheld as a personal digital assistant as well to keep phone numbers, appointments and even manage your e-mail.

For GPS software and reviews be sure to check the Mobiletopsoft.com website.

Mobile operator Vodafone is taking a second shot at selling its signal booster product after a trail run last year failed to meet company expectations. The company has re-launched the product this year at a reduced price and with better signalling capacity, according to insiders.

Vodafone had earlier launched the signal booster to address the problems of weak and unreliable network coverage that some of its customers faced frequently. With a view to resolving such network problems, Vodafone launched the Vodafone Access Gateway last year. The latest femtocell technology was used to create this device. However, many customers shunned the product because of its high price of £160. Others who used it found that it did not meet expectations. The product failed to make mark in the markets.

However, Vodafone is confident that in its second and new avatar, the femtocell technology based product is sure to be a massive hit with consumers. This is because firstly, the price of the device has been reduced to £50, and secondly, the technical problems that were reported by users of the earlier version during its previous run have been successfully dealt with and solved, according to company sources.

This second run of the product is expected to be highly successful. Guy Laurence, the chief executive of Vodafone in the UK, said in this regard that positive feedback has already started pouring in from various customers regarding the product’s excellent performance. Laurence added that the booster is perfect for getting better signals in a basement which is a boon for many home office users of business broadband.

Vodafone is calling the device the Sure Signal box because they are willing to give an ‘absolute guarantee’ regarding its performance. The booster looks like a mast and it utilizes the connection of home broadband to provide better network coverage by drawing on the company’s networks to provide 3G access within a limited area.

Market experts predict that the booster will only be in demand by those who face inconsistent connectivity, and will not be particularly attractive to those who have better coverage or who rarely experience patchy reception.

If you are looking for a state-of-the-art phone then the Siemens Cordless Phone range has everything that you need.Regardless of whether you need a phone for your office or for your home,Siemens Gigaset phones fit around your needs.Perhaps you are a small business and are often away from the office and therefore unable to get to the phone to talk to your clients. Answerphone functionality is just want you need and with the Siemens Gigaset C385 you get this functionality so regardless of what your clients have to say, you can catch it all and listen again.Nothing is more annoying than missing a call and not knowing who has called or even what the number was. This can be especially problematic for your teenage daughter who I am guessing spends most of her time with the phone glued to their ear. The Siemens Gigaset A265 records a list of missed calls and has a battery able to provide decent talk time – not that we should be encouraging your children to spend hours on the phone., so the Siemens Gigaset C595 comes complete with a digital phonebook to store all those important contact details. This particular Siemens cordless phone is also very ECO friendly; reducing power consumption and transmission power and letting you communicate without harming the planet. You can even send sms messages. Many of the Siemens Gigaset cordless phone range allow you to add up to 6 handsets to the base station. This gives you the option of having phones all over your home – ideal when someone ‘misplaces’ a handset. If you are looking for a cordless phone that is easy to use and install, then the Siemens Gigaset range has just what you are looking for your office or home.

Anybody who has even a
minimal interest in the
current developments
in telephone
technology will be aware of the
growing popularity of VoIP as a
way to make low cost and even free
international calls. It is an irrefutable fact
that it is the cost saving potential that
continues to be the
principal reason for the
growth of VoIP phone systems and
it is undeniable that cheap VoIP calls are
an alluring and cost effective
means of communicating. The state of the
economy has
heightened the need
for a lot of people to
seek to
reduce costs and
migrating from the traditional phone system to a VoIP
phone system is considered by many as
an easy way
to save.

These days the quality and
reliability of VoIP calls has made the use of
traditional telephone technology
look increasingly moribund. The costs of the old analog
systems are viewed
as too high and now that an alternative has established itself on the scene
phone users are
keen to
switch so that
they no longer squander
money on outrageous
telephone bills.

Although using VoIP for business or for personal use can save you cash
on virtually any phone call it is the international calling sector where
the most outstanding savings can be
made. The
difference between the
price of calls using traditional
telephone long-distance providers and VoIP service
providers is
mind-boggling.

If you go down the
traditional route you will be
billed exorbitant amounts of money
to phone someone overseas.
But if you have an
internet connection you can make cheap VoIP calls
internationally once you have the relevant software
(supplied by the VoIP service provider) and a headset
or internet phone. These VoIP calls
that you make to other
countries will cost only a few pence
- merely a fraction of what you would
otherwise have to pay out.

With savings of this
order the case for
shifting to VoIP is becoming irresistible.

Finally it must also be
mentioned that the use of VoIP is now
spreading out to the
mobile phone sector. Cheap long-distance and
international VoIP calls over mobile phones and other devices are the newest
innovation in the VoIP success story.

Preferred by many globetrotters in St. Louis, MO and around the world, mobile satellite phones are an indispensable communication gadget for most businesses and professionals. While mobile networks generally cover most areas, there are, however, remote parts of the world where a normal mobile phone is totally useless, and that’s where mobile satellite phones excel.

For instance, forestry workers, miners and structural engineers may be required to work in remote areas, such as secluded forests or in locations miles from the nearest cellular tower, and it is vital that they have some form of communication to enable them to complete their necessary tasks. A satellite phone will allow them to have phone service, no matter how remote their location may be.

Though satellite mobile phones are quite expensive, they can be your only option when you absolutely, positively need a phone in far corners of the planet. The unit price can range anywhere from $200 to thousands of dollars, depending on the brand and handset type. Per minute rates can also be steep, but there are affordable prepaid cellular plans for satellite phones that you can obtain in St. Louis. Most of these prepaid cellular plans also offer perks, such as unlimited free incoming calls and flat rates anywhere in the world, to name just a few.

As there are with standard cellular phones, there are many different brand choices when choosing a satellite phone, so you need to ensure that you select the proper phone and provider for your location and needs. Consider the area you need to operate in to find a company that has a suitable network. Some companies only operate in specific areas while others offer coverage in 120 countries.

Consider all your options and then decide if you have a strong need for a satellite phone and if it’s worth the added expense.
